What is the Instituto Diplomun?
The Instituto Diplomun is an organization that, although it emerged in Salvador, today operates throughout Brazil and the world, aiming to democratize Model UN conferences, diplomacy and soft-skills such as public speaking, leadership and negotiation. Through activities - such as DiploMUN Online, Diplocamp, BaMUN, workshops, courses and mentorships - we enhance fundamental skills in today's citizen and ensure that they reache the best version of themselves, exploring the core of their intrapersonal and interpersonal development. We currently impact more than 20,000 young people from 30 countries around the world through our events and more than 500,000 people through the reach of social media, proving the project's diversity. Finally, we state that in addition to quantity, we value excellence, obtaining an average score of 9.6/10 for our overall performance in an anonymous survey carried out among the participants.
What events are held by the Instituto Diplomun?
In 2021 we held the 2nd edition of DiploMUN Online, which took place on the 1st and 2nd of May and had 14 committees organized in both Portuguese and English. The event in question had more than 4.500 students registered in just 2 hours, making it the largest event ever held in Latin America in terms of the Model United Nations category. In the same year, with the mission of expanding access to the model, we organized, in partnership with the Department of Education of the State of Bahia, BaMUN, the first UN simulation aimed exclusively at students from Bahia public-schools, marking the history of national education. Furthermore, we also believe in the complete development of participants in the scope of MUN through complete training. In order to achieve such development, we carry out mentorships, which makes students from all over Brazil, regardless of their initial experience, participate and excel at the largest and most renowned conferences in the world. In the 2022 edition, we reached a historic milestone: with 13 participants awarded at Harvard MUN, we tripled the Brazilian record for awards at the event, in addition to achieving, for the first time in the country's history, the highest honor granted at the conference. Undoubtedly, the historic milestones achieved in our events over the last few years enhance our desire to ensure that students develop their skills and assume a leading role at the national and international level.
But, after all, what is a Model United Nations conference and what is its importance?
In today's scenario, there is an undeniable deficit of qualities inherent to the extraordinary professional and citizen by Brazilian students. The current educational project does not effectively cover crucial features such as public speaking, negotiation and problem solving. Also, according to columnist Thaís Oliveira Gama, 60% of Brazilians are terrified of exposing themselves and speaking in public and only 8% know how to express themselves fully. Despite this, such skills become increasingly important in a globalized and multicultural world, making their development important. In this way, the UN Simulations (also known as MUN, from Model United Nations) emerged in order to provide, in a direct way, the knowledge and development of critical thinking, group leadership, solving global problems, oratory and legitimizing opposite ideas. The conferences are academic events aimed at Elementary, Middle and Higher Education, in which young people, through a debate, discuss global issues, representing diplomats from their respective countries, being recognized as “delegates”. The central idea is that the delegates reach an agreement through negotiation and oratory techniques, and that they can, in a peaceful way and respecting the state sovereignty of each country, present a resolution document to the committee's topic. In this way, students develop fundamental skills such as leadership and public speaking, in addition to engaging in a community with thousands of other students, building fantastic networking abilities.
How to participate in Instituto Diplomun events?
From bootcamps to simulations, the Instituto Diplomun holds several events throughout the year. In most of the events, people from all over Brazil (and for some, all over the world) can participate, since the projects carried out do not present geographical barriers. In addition, such opportunities are published on the institute's official Instagram and registration is carried out through our website. In order not to miss out, we recommend that all those interested in developing their skills and participating in a Instituto Diplomun project periodically check the opening of new registrations for our events in social media.
